1. Importance of a Cover Letter

A well-presented Cover Letter definitely creates a good impression on the employers. Getting the basics right, easily makes a difference and allows an application to stand out in the competition. The cover letter is your first sales pitch to a potential employer. A good one introduces you to the employer and explains why you are superior among other candidates applying for the same job.

2. Make Your Resume Precise and Attractive

We have all read novels and stories that take forever to get going, which insists on recounting every single insignificant detail of the central character’s existence before finally getting to the heart of the account. This is not a luxury affordable for your resume. First impression really matters! Your resume is a marketing document, and hence, must attract the readers’ attention.

3. Shortage of Time at the Employers’ End

Employers get to see loads and loads of resumes during their recruitment period. Obviously, they cannot go through each and every resume especially through those that do not seem attractive. Applicants can make the employers’ life easier by keeping their resumes’ content short and accurate. It is essential that you set fire to the readers’ attention in the very beginning or within thirty seconds/less.

4. Incorrect English

Why risk a dream job on poor English writing? Only job applications written in grammatically correct and fine English are given importance by busy employers. The rest go to the bin.

You might be well-qualified and perfect for a particular job, but the employer may disqualify you if your resume contains incorrect sentences and wrong use of vocabulary. It is very important for the job seekers to make sure that they double check the content of the resume. They should  check the spellings, punctuation and grammar very carefully.

5. Visual Illustration

The visual illustration of your CV is very important. If employers cannot find the desired information quickly, they will move on to someone else’s resume. You should use plenty of ‘white’ space in your CV with appropriate headings.

If you are applying online, an email/cover letter starting with “Hi” might cause your resume to end up in rubbish. Write an email as you would write a proper letter. Instead of “Hi,” write, “Dear Sir/Sir/Madam. ……” and instead of “Thanks,” finish off with “Sincerely.”

In the body of the email, do not start with “Please find the attached….”; always offer your services and do mention the “Job Title” of the job that you are applying for and keep it simple.

6. Avoid Unnecessary Detail

Quantifying accomplishments help, but remember to be discreet about it. Phrases like “managed a budget of Rs. 500,000” or “led a team of five” might catch an employers’ eye but in a bad way. It is better to spin it as “managed company’s largest budget” or “was a Team Lead”.

Avoid a 14 page CV with details of every piece of course work since you were a kid. If it doesn’t fit at all, cut it down to the most relevant and impressive items and alter it to the specific job in question. Long paragraphs & too much detail can leave a poor impression. A CV should be an accurate summary of an individual’s career history rather than a biography.

7. Proof Reading

Nothing looks worse on a job application than spelling errors. It shows  that you didn’t take enough care or time to look over your application. Spelling errors can result in depicting your wrong impression on an employer. Check and recheck your curriculum for spelling and grammatical errors prior to sending it off to the employers. Small catches make a big (and bad) impression, silently implying that you are careless, linguistically challenged, or both.

8. Highlight Your Achievements

You need to highlight your achievements. Remember your CV is your sales document, if it does not say clearly and unequivocally why you should be employed then it has failed.

An employer will only want to hire you if they can see a benefit in it for themselves. So, do tell them that you are beneficial for the company.

Enlisting your achievements in your resume can also benefit you, in case the employer you have applied for uses some application to filter candidates from his CV database. Such applications are useful for employers, as they can filter candidates using their desired keywords.

Last but not the least, it is very important for the job seekers to look for a job with determination. They should keep the above mentioned points in mind, so that they have better chances of getting their desired job, instead of losing it. “Don’t fall at the last hurdle” is a friendly advice.   1. There is no doubt that Covering Letter and CV bear their unique importance when applying for a job, but the idea of furnishing a very attractive CV is fading with the passage of time. It is because mostly companies(Employers) are generating their pool for applicants online these days. Online systems are pre-designed for CVs and the applicants are required to just enter the relevant information.

  2. Indeed a good article but is deserves some healthy criticism. Under the heading “Proof Reading “in the second line, (It shows hat you didn’t take) there is a typo i-e. instead of the word “that” “hat” has been written.

    Why with perfect resume, excellent kills and brilliant interview talent go twisted, and what to do about it? Should we improve our “Cover letter” and “Resume” even more??? Is this the solution or I m not getting the point???

  8. Everything mentioned above is worth appreciation, and authentic. I wanted to add an other thing here that Knowledge regarding your field of expertise is very much necessary. When you have more knowledge as compared to other candidates, no matter what your resumes or confidential may be, it will make room for you at desired places of job.
