What To Avoid During A Job Interview
During the entire job hunting process, the most significant and tricky stage is the interview. Candidates feel anxious and nervous before and during the interview process and cannot rest unless they have heard back from the company. For some this phone call brings a sense of achievement with the news that they have been selected for the job, but many receive no calls at all conveying that they have failed to land the job. There might be many reasons why a candidate fails to get the job, most of which are related to the interview process. Many candidates are under the impression that they did well in the interview and are devastated when they are rejected. The fact is that most of the candidates have no idea that during the interview session they might have committed some grave mistakes which cost them the job. These mistakes are so common that most of the candidates repeat them over and over again without realizing the damage they are doing to their career. If you think you are one of those candidates, there is no need to panic as we have identified some of the most common mistakes made by candidates during an interview so that you can avoid them in the future.
Most Common Interview Mistakes:
A lot of people make some serious mistakes during the interview which end up turning a job opportunity into a disaster. In order to avoid making these mistakes we first need to identify these mistakes. Some of the most common mistakes by a candidate during an interview are:
Being Late
A lot of candidates fail to appear for the interview on time and think that they can get away with a lame excuse. Nothing throws the interviewer off like coming late to an interview and then failing to apologize. If you are filing to arrive at the job interview on time, it gives the interviewer an impression that you are not taking the job opportunity seriously and hence is not someone they were looking for. So to make a good impression during the interview you should be there on time. If you fail to do that apologize for the delay and reassure the interviewer that this is not a habitual practice.
Dressing Inappropriately
Dressing right is the most important part of an interview. Assuming that a casual dress might do for your interview is a big mistake. If you have any doubts you can do a little research regarding the company culture and find out what kind of dressing is expected. Nevertheless it is better to be overdressed rather than being underdressed. Also, try to keep the accessories to a minimum so that you look professional.
Being Unprepared
Some candidates show up for an interview without even the slightest preparation and as a result fail to answer any tough questions asked by the interviewer. Not researching about the company you are applying to can also be fatal for the interview. Make sure that when you are appearing for an interview you know what kind of work entails the job that you have applied for and you have a general idea of the company’s background.
Talking Too Much Or Too Little
Talking too much or saying next to nothing is also a mistake we have seen during an interview. You should answer a question completely and then let the interviewer proceed to his next one. Blabbering uselessly and interrupting the interviewer creates a bad impression. Similarly, answering the questions in monosyllables and nor elaborating on anything also leaves the interviewer dissatisfied, thus minimizing your chances of getting a job. It is also important to ask important and well thought questions related to the job. Asking silly questions or not asking any questions at all is not the right approach also.
Badmouthing Your Employer
Nothing raises the red flags more than badmouthing your former employer in front of the interviewer as it points towards a lack of professional maturity and failure to take responsibility. Trying to justify your reasons for leaving the previous employer by criticizing him is a bad idea and should be avoided at all costs. Even if your boss actually was a horrible person, there is no need to share that with the interviewer. Keep your reasons for leaving the last job and your views about your previous boss professional.
Lying
You should never lie during an interview or provide false information on your resume. If you are qualified and skilled enough for the position you have applied for, you will get the job. If however you feel like you are not qualified for the job then you should not apply in the first place, no matter how desperately you want the job. Lying in the interview certainly diminishes your chances of getting the job. Be open about your weaknesses and strong points. When you state you weaknesses make sure that you also point out what steps you have taken to address the particular weakness and how far have you succeeded in the effort.
Lacking Enthusiasm
Appearing disinterested and bored during the interview is one of the most fatal mistakes that can ruin your chances of getting selected for the job. Show the employer that you care about the job and are excited at the prospect of joining the company. If the interviewer senses that you are not interested in the job, he will not call you for a second interview.
Asking About Benefits Too Soon
Bringing in the salary questions too soon and repeatedly raises the red flags as the interviewer senses that you are not very interested in the job as much as the benefits and the money involved in it. You should wait for the interviewer to bring up the salary negotiations as he will definitely ask you about the expected salary range before the interview session comes to an end.
Concluding Thoughts
The entire job hunting process from writing your resume to showing up at the interview and the follow up after that requires a lot of effort and skill. In order to get the job you have to make sure that during all these steps you have put up your best performance. Make sure that you do not make any of the mistakes mentioned above and you will most definitely succeed in the interview process.

Very good and complete suggestions….
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:55 pm
‘Guideline presented are quite important for appearing in an interview but 1 more thing as being an HR Manager myself which I also try to look into candidates is the Confidence and determination to learn. If the candidate is motivated enough and is desperate to explore the new horizon and is proving to be keen to learn then i take him as a person who will be able to manage the scenario. So being confident and determined is very much required.

It varies from job 2 job, but over all it is a good article.
June 3rd, 2010 at 3:29 pm
I agree with the points, but some times one is unable to practice some of point mentioned above, like now a days people keep on applying for jobs and some time they get calls they even don’t remember that applying for. Moreover most of the time interview calls are so abrupt and hasty that they are calling you in the evening and they want you to appear for the interview by next morning 8′o clock. Once my younger brother got an offer letter for a job but was allowed only 90 minutes to respond in yes or no. So employer and specially HR people might also need some suggestions

June 3rd, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Good article for those who are going through the interview process
June 3rd, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Same things were taught at workshop on Job Hunting at NRSP-IRM.
I think these things should be taught at University level. Fresh Graduates have no idea about solicitation or cold calls and how to prepare CV. Most of the time I find tables in fresh graduate’s resume, that’s a total disaster. For God sake try to be serious about job hunting.
June 3rd, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Totally agreed, as I myself take so many interviews and I also note such points in the candidates while taking interview.
and the person who follows the above mentioned comments will definitely qualify in interview.

June 4th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

June 4th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Thanks for this. One very useful point to note:
When answering questions, always structure them in the following manner:
Situation
Task
Action
Result
This ensures that you provide a structured response to each question and also prevents you from talking too much (blabbering!) or too little.
I applied this approach in a recent interview and it worked wonders. The hiring manager when offering me the job mentioned that she was very impressed with my interview style and the structured responses I gave for each of the questions.
Also remember, the focus is on ‘I’, not ‘We’. The interviewer wants to know about YOU and what you did to overcome certain situations/problems in your area of work.

Good basic information. I’d like to add that when one is facing a female manager/ employer please address her as Ma’am regardless of her age, not MISS. Ensure that your tone and answers are the same as you would use for male interviewers. Shake her hand if offered, or a Salam Alaikum will suffice.
June 4th, 2010 at 4:54 pm

This is really good info for me regarding what should I do at the time of interview and I humbly thank ROZEE.PK
June 5th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
I agree only 60% to this text. Every person strives for benefits. A person should be honest wherever he/she works and must strive for more benefits and should explain their interest to join that company. I think a person could not be fair with others who is not fair with him/her self.
June 5th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
All the points are really strong and I 100% agree with you
June 5th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
It is very right. Everything is good but some time we are in an emergency and cannot reach on time due to some family problem. We are confused during the interview as to what we can do in this situation.
June 5th, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Very much helpful, outstanding. All the job hunters must strictly follow these points/ guidelines when they go for an interview.
June 5th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
I am fully committed to your suggestions.
June 5th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Really Thankful to ROZEE.PK for the above suggestions.
June 5th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
These are the most important tips, one should follow it but many other things which should be taken in consideration are:
You must look easy, don’t be worried and before or during interview never think that if you loose this job what will happen, because this feeling make you nervous and you do unexpected mistakes. You should be quite sure that feeding creature is responsibility of Allah, and if he has written it for you no one will deprive you of it. Also be confident that you will get the job, never lie, and try to elaborate that you are the right person for the job you have applied for, think that you and your employer both are in need of each other. That will help you, you should also have the knowledge of job you are applying for…
I did it and got engineering job…

June 7th, 2010 at 8:34 am
Nice post, also you must ask of know you position and benefits you can get but you should not look like
Asking About Benefits Too Soon
since, in most companies in pakistan the best deal is based on the need and supply. If you think that you are in demand and have done well in technical interview I stress that you must ask for the benefits you can get. Most HR managers will make you look like you are not in demand or ignore the benefits but you must handle the issue with skill. Its one of the main thing from which an HR manager judges that resource is new or experienced.
June 7th, 2010 at 8:37 am

Asking About Benefits Too Soon:
I disagree with this point as a professional you must be clear of the job that you are applying to with all the relevant details e.g. as JD, JG, JS, Remuneration Package, etc.
Sometimes it creates complications as when an employee joins without the discussion of package, the employer offers less package than advertised, what would the employee do then…..
This sort of Benefits discussion will always be favorable to the employee as it shows the solid interest of employee and his professional attitude.
My verdict to discuss the Package to avoid any complication after wards as a true professional never leaves any question unanswered .

Asking About Benefits Too Soon!!!
Many of readers have discussed this point,
I also disagree with it, how can a candidate forget or avoid to ask the major question? Where he/she gonna join or work so it is really important to ask about it.
Except this all points have value all candidates should consider or work on it.
well i would like to wish a good luck to every one

What should you do, when they make an interview call saying that we have arranged an interview at a certain time with you, and we are not able to make an interview at that time??
Should we ask them to re-arranged the interview or in any circumstances we have to appear for the interview??
